What We Mean

People. Science. Woodlands.

EcoSentience brings practical stewardship, ecological research, and responsible technology together in service of ancient woodland protection.

People

Stewardship and community

Trustees, volunteers, researchers, landowners, donors, and local communities provide the judgement, consent, labour, and care that conservation depends on.

Science

Evidence and careful methods

eDNA, fungal biodiversity research, microclimate monitoring, field notes, and responsible analysis help turn woodland concern into usable evidence.

Woodlands

The living focus

Ancient woods such as Mickley Wood are irreplaceable habitats. Their soils, fungi, trees, water, and seasonal rhythms set the measure of success.

Our Mission

Practical conservation,
grounded in evidence.

EcoSentience exists to understand, monitor, and protect ancient woodland. Our first focus is Mickley Wood in Northumberland, with fungi and woodland microclimate at the centre of the evidence we are building.

Why Fungi Matter

Most woodland life is not obvious at first glance.

Fungi are essential to woodland ecosystems, but much fungal diversity remains poorly described. That knowledge gap matters for ancient woods, where soil, roots, deadwood, moisture, and seasonal change all shape resilience.

Research

eDNA sampling can help detect organisms that ordinary surveys often miss.

Monitoring

Microclimate records add context for changes in soil, fungi, and woodland health.

Stewardship

Field notes and local care keep the work practical, place-based, and accountable.

Technology

Responsible AI supports analysis and communication; it is a tool, not the mission.

Support Practical Woodland Work
